Manchester has good rail connections to most towns and cities throughout the United Kingdom and it is an attractive form of travel.

The main trunk route to London operates out of Piccadilly Station. Virgin trains who operate the service also have direct trains to Southern England to towns like Oxford, Reading and Brighton and easy connections for the South-west at Birmingham. By taking a short train journey to Crewe or Preston it is
easy to connect to the main West Coast Line.

Fares
The fares on the rail network are very complex with a bewildering array of promotional fares. Broadly the cheapest fares are those purchased well in advance.

For overseas visitors there are no true e-tickets, but the cheaper advance purchase tickets can be bought in advance and collected at Manchester Piccadilly or Manchester Airport using special machines.

This is possible using 'The Trainline' online service, using the query tool opposite. UK based travellers can have their tickets by mail to UK addresses only.
