Liverpool Lime Street is a Grade II listed railway interchange with a rich heritage in the city that it serves. The station is the main long distance terminus, services are provided by First North Western, Virgin West Coast, Arriva Trains Northern, Central Trains and Wales & Borders Trains.

Lime Street is also closely linked to the Merseyrail regional rail system, which has direct services from the Liverpool loop to New Brighton, West Kirby, Chester and Ellesmere Port.

Liverpool Virgin Train at Piccadilly Station
The key long distance direct routes from Liverpool are to London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds.
Virgin trains run a broadly hourly service to London Euston, taking around 2 hours 40 minutes, (though do check for frequent track maintenance, especially at weekends which can substantially delay trains).
There are about 3-4 trains an hour of one type or another taking around an hour to Manchester during the day time.
Trans Pennine trains broadly run hourly to Leeds and York via Manchester. At York you can interchange with the East Coast Line running up to Newcastle and Edinburgh.
To interchange with the West Coast line up to Glasgow, local services run to Preston, Wigan and Crewe.

Fares
The fares on the rail network are very complex with a bewildering array of promotional fares. Broadly the cheapest fares are those purchased well in advance.

For overseas visitors there are no true e-tickets, but the cheaper advance purchase tickets can be bought in advance and collected at Liverpool Lime Street using special machines.

This is possible using 'The Trainline' online service, using the query tool opposite. UK based travellers can have their tickets by mail to UK addresses only.
