Manchester
Airport has a one stop public transport interchange called 'The Station'.
Manchester Airport Train Station is an integral part of this.
Services run to over 100 destinations in the UK including many tourist
destinations such as the Lake District and York. There are direct,
night service trains to and from Sheffield, Leeds, Huddersfield, Manchester,
Bolton, Preston and Blackpool. |
 |
| Trains
run to Manchester Piccadilly rail station and take approximately 15
- 20 minutes, many continue onto Oxford Road, Deansgate and Salford
Central stations. From Manchester Piccadilly you can connect onto
rail services countrywide. |

Manchester
The core route connecting Manchester Airport with Manchester City
Centre is to Piccadilly Station in the City Centre. Services run 5
or 6 times an hour during the day and a full 24x7 service is operated.
Manchester City Centre has a number of busy stations, Piccadilly being
the main station for most visitors. It is very close to the main business
and shopping centre. There is a free shuttle bus which picks up outside
the main entrance which does a tour of the city centre. The city tram
service also has a terminus here.
The line arcs around the City Centre, many trains will be going further
afield after stopping at Piccadilly.

Liverpool
There is a direct service to Liverpool which operates on average hourly.
There are many more trains from Liverpool that stop short at Manchester
Victoria station, where connections are available to Manchester Airport.
Lancashire
& Greater Manchester
The north-west of England has a dense network of regional railways
servicing most towns in the area. Only the direct services are shown
on the above map, most other towns can be visited with a single interconnection.
There are most of the time two trains an hour to Rochdale, Blackpool
and Bolton, and trains run throughout the night to these destinations.
Hourly trains run to Windermere in the Lake District during the week,
a connection is often required at the weekend.
Yorkshire
Trains run broadly twice an hour across the Pennines to Sheffield,
Doncaster, Leeds and York. These destinations enjoy a near 24 hour
service. |
Rest
of United Kingdom
Virgin Trains run a comprehensive long distance schedule from Manchester
Piccadilly to destinations mostly south of Manchester, including London,
Birmingham, Bristol, Oxford and Reading.
There is a broadly hourly service to Crewe on the West Coast Line
where you can pick up trains to Wales and up to Scotland.
The North Pennine route interconnects with the East Coast Line at
York opening up Scotland and there are direct trains from Manchester
to Newcastle and Middlesborough.
Fares
are frustratingly complex, many of the cheapest fares are advance
purchase or are only valid for off peak times.
For overseas visitors there is frustratingly no true e-tickets. There
is however a "ticket collection" scheme where you take advantage
of the advance purchase discounted tickets on-line and pick up your
tickets at Manchester Airport - from a machine. This is an option
when you purchase tickets through 'The Trainline' - see search engine
above.
Uk residents only can have tickets mailed to their home address. |
