As a major city in the UK, Manchester of course has accommodation of all grades for all budgets from hostels to five star luxury hotels to apartments.

The City Centre area itself is quite compact, it takes no more than 20 minutes to walk from top to bottom.

Manchester is also undergoing a lot of redevelopment and refurbishment and the choice of accommodation is increasing all of the time.

Rates tend to be quite volatile.

As a general rule, rates during the week are more expensive than at the weekend. But if Manchester United have a home game this all changes and rooms become very hard to come by with no discounting.

Similarly if there is a big act on at the MEN arena, Europe's largest indoor concert hall the same effect on hotel pricing and availability becomes apparent.

Hotel accommodation is spread throughout the city centre, below is a brief guide to the districts:
  • Piccadilly Station - Manchester's main railway station and with frequent trains to the airport is the entry point to Manchester for many visitors. The station is at the north-east corner of the city centre. The area immediately around the station is undergoing major redevelopment, with many of the old warehouses by the canal basin being refurbished into trendy apartments. Around 400m away is Piccadilly Gardens, immediately adjacent to the main shopping area and surrounded by hotels for all budgets. More details
  • Arndale Centre & Shopping District - The main shopping area is to the north of city centre between the MEN Arena & Victoria Station to the west of it and Piccadilly Station to the East. The two major landmarks here are the Arndale Centre, a pretty standard Mall and Exchange Square. Most of the major multiples have large stores around these landmarks. There is very little accommodation among the shops, but on the periphery are the hotels around Piccadilly Gardens, and to the west a couple of very large tower block hotels by budget chains and the Lowry & Renaissance Hotels, two of the most luxurious hotels in Manchester. More details
  • MEN Arena & Victoria Station - At the north west tip of the city centre is the MEN arena, next door to Victoria Station and adjacent to the shopping area. MEN arena is Europe's largest indoor concert venue which can accommodate up to 21,000 fans, so when there is a big event hotel bedrooms are scarce and have prices reflecting their rarity value. In the immediate vicinity are several budget offerings both independent and chain hotels and the Lowry & Renaissance Hotels, two of the most luxurious hotels in Manchester. More details
  • University and Eastern City Centre - South of Piccadilly Station is an area covering the eastern section of the city centre dominated by Manchester University, the UK's largest single site campus. To the west of this district is the main coach station and China Town. There is a wide range of accommodation covering all budgets, many of them large chain hotels. More details
  • G-Mex Centre & South City Centre - The G-Mex Centre is a major landmark of the south city centre. Adjacent to the G-Mex is the International Conference Centre and Bridgewater Hall, a major concert venue. St Peter's Square with the Town Hall, Library and main Tourist Office is close by. Around this area, there is a lot of commerce, contrasting with the shopping area to the north. Again there is accommodation options covering all sectors of the market. More details
